About The Work
In folklore, women are often placed into clearly defined roles. Good or evil. One thing or the other.
That is what draws me to Baba Yaga.
Depending on the story, she may be frightening or helpful, dangerous or wise. She does not fit neatly into either side. I chose to make The Forest a diptych because of that duality, separating the composition into two pieces that still belong together.
The tree and watching eyes connect her to the wild, enchanted forest she inhabits, a place that feels ancient, alive, and perhaps aware of you, too.
She is not one thing. She contains contradictions.
I carried that sense of transformation into the glass itself. Alongside traditional stained glass, The Forest incorporates custom kiln-fused elements and UV-reactive and phosphorescent glass. As the surrounding light changes, different colors and details emerge, allowing the work to shift between its light and dark states.
